The department was officially established in 1964 when the Pre-Degree course started. The Physics UG program began in 1979, and the Physics PG program began in 2001.  The Department’s field of teaching mainly comprises theoretical physics, materials science, and electronics. The project work is also incorporated into the course curriculum in accordance with UGC guidelines. Additionally, the department offers various certificate courses, which help the students to build expertise in their field of study. The department organizes popular talks, interactive lectures, seminars, and workshops on a variety of science topics on a regular basis. The department has skilled and experienced permanent faculty members as well as non-teaching staff.  The research degrees of faculties span a wide range of areas including nanotechnology, material science, spectroscopy, and space and atmospheric science, and the department is still engaged in related research projects. Under the department, there is an astronomy club that observes and studies the night sky. Through DST-FIST and DBT STAR support to the Department, faculty and students regularly engage in a wide range of research projects, training programs, workshops, seminars, and conferences. Our graduates are admitted to prestigious national and international institutions for higher studies. The department is fortunate to have the expertise and support of former faculty members. The prestigious Prof. Valsan Memorial Award has been instituted for the scores in both UG and PG examinations. The majority of the Department’s alumni are employed by prestigious institutions and other government departments, and the Department enjoys strong alumni support.
