When Sree Narayana College, Cherthala was established in 1964, Mrs Kamala Gopidas was the only lecturer employed to teach Hindi. Mrs Uma. B. Nair was additionally appointed as Hindi lecturer as 2nd year P.D.C classes started next year. There was no independent department for Hindi as at the time, Hindi and Malayalam formed a single department by the name “Oriental Languages Department.” Degree classes commenced in our college only in 1971.

Mrs. Kamala Gopidas served our college for almost 28 years, i.e. from 1964 to 1991. For many years, she served as the head of the department. She retired from service in March 1991. Mrs. Uma. B. Nair served our college as Hindi teacher for almost 28 years in three separate periods. She got her Ph.D from Cochin University in 1991. She was the Head of the department from 1st April 1991 to 30th April 1997. Mrs Uma. B. Nair retired in 1997.

Mrs. Saraswathy Amma was appointed as Hindi teacher in 1971 and she worked here from September 1971 to July 1972. In July 1972, she was transferred from our college. Mrs Lily Raman served our department during the period of 1972. Later she was transferred from our college. Mrs. Lily Raman served our department during the period of 1972-1993 and Mrs T P Leela from June 1985 to June 1997. Mr Narasimha Bhat  also served our department for a short period. Mrs T Radhamani Amma was the Head of the department during 1986-1988. Mr Sugathan also remained the head for a short period. The service of Dr A K Ravi was also assigned to our department in 1994. Dr R. Mini worked in our department from 1997 onwards. Mr P D Sahadevan worked in our department for a very short period from June 1997 to August 1997. Dr Shiny Mathews served our Department between June 1998 and July 1999. Dr V N Ramani had been serving our department from June 2000. Mr A K Ravi was transferred from the college in June 2001. Dr V N Ramani had served as the head of the department till May 2015 and retired. Later, Dr R Mini was a single faculty and had served as the head of the department till May 2016 and was transferred from the college. From June 2016, a lone faculty member, Dr Lavanya K R has been serving as the head of the department till date.
