Physical education and Sports has a widely established and accepted role in higher education. It is essential to develop the vigour and will of boys and girls reaching to quality personality. More than that Physical Education and sports have attained an unprecedented Interest among the youth and SN College, Cherthala has a tradition of catering the needs of students of this backward area and it has glorious history of 55 years of dedicated involvement and efficient team work. The department has succeeded in identifying and giving sports training to talented students who generally come from poor socio-economic background.

The department has started in 1965. First personal in this college and department was Sri. A Vijayanandan, an International starter in athletics who officiated in various international and national athletic meets including the 1982 Asian games at New Delhi. The indoor Gymnasium hall , Football field and 200 meter track was developed during his tenure. Besides the college men Kabaddi team were winner in the Kerala university Inter-Collegiate during 1988-89. Many players represented the university during this year. Former students namely Jayapal and Bijumon were captained Kerakla university team 1992 and 1995 respectively. It is added mile stone in history of the department that under the captaincy of alumni jayapal that Kerala University won the gold in All India Interuniversity championship.

Our former head of the department and present assistant director of Physical Education Calicut University DR. K. P. Manoj joined the college on 20-10-1995and served 5 years. During this period from 1997 to 2000 SN College Cherthalas Kho- Kho team for women was the champions in Kerala University intercollegiate. Table Tennis Women team were Runner-up in the Kerala university inter-collegiate 1997 to 2000.Men Cross-Country team were runners-up in team championship during1997 to 1999.Men power lifting team were champions the period 1999.Men Volleyball team were runners up in the Kerala university inter collegiate 2000 -2001.

Besides Dr.KP Manoj was project director” Kerala state physical fitness program’ conducted by Directorate of sports and youth affairs, Govt of Kerala.

Aims and Objectives of the department

The aim of physical education is the optimum development of the physically, mentally and socially integrated and adjusted individuals through direct instruction and participation in selected total body sports. Rhythmic and Gymnastic activities conducted according to the social and hygiene standards. it aims to influence an individual through experience in such a way that while behaving as a good citizen he may able to satisfy his desires. Considering these facts the following objectives are set by the department.
