The department of Chemistry, Sree Narayana College, Cherthala has been one of the components of this college right from its date of establishment in the year 1964. Chemistry was taught only at the pre-degree level. Smt Mini Valsan was the head of the department at the time. Other staff members were D Santhamma, K G Geetha, G Krishna Iyer and R Jagannivasan. The members of teaching staff then increased from 5 to 7 with increasing pre-degree batches. The department was upgraded as UG department in the year 1980. Gradually the department started expanding with 14 teaching staff by the year 1984. But by the delinking of pre-degree the strength of the faculty was again reduced to 5.

In the year 2020, the department was upgraded as a Post-graduate department , with the sanctioning of a new generation postgraduate course MSc Chemistry with specialization in Drug Design and Development. The Department gives training to selected students for a certificate course entitled “Synthesis of soaps and detergents” from 2019 onwards. So far, 39 batches of students have taken UG degrees from this department. Most of our alumni are employed in various government and private sectors.
