Addressing the environmental issues is a multidisciplinary task and for its objective accomplishment Kerala government has organized an action plan to educate students of secondary education and higher education. In this direction Directorate of environment and climate change, Kerala government has established a system by which enormous manpower available with the student is utilized. Bhoomithrasena club of Sree Narayana College Cherthala also giving its hand to achieving above said aim.

Objectives

  1. To encourage the students to appreciate environment and environmental issues of the locality
  2. To provide environmental education opportunities for students and involve them in addressing environmental issues of the locality
  3. To utilize the enormous manpower available with students as conduits for awareness of the society
  4. To make students practice and advocate sustainable lifestyles
  5. To improve the overall environmental quality of the institution.
  1. ACTIVITIES
  1. List of suggested activities for BMCs (only tentative)
  2. Organize Seminars, debates, lectures and popular talks on environmental issues in the College/ Schoolsand surrounding areas.
  3. Field visits to local environmentally important sites including polluted and degraded sites, wild lifeparks, coastal areas, etc.
  4. Organize awareness camps to propagate waste minimization, personal hygiene habits and sustainablelife styles.
  5. Observance of environmentally significant days: (It is mandatory for BMCs to observe at least two ofthe following days).

  10.   Mobilize awareness against environmentally unsound practices like garbage disposal in unauthorized places, unsafe disposal of hospital wastes, etc.
  1. Actions based activities like tree plantation, cleanliness drives within and outside the campus, maintain waste management units, construct water harvesting structures, practice recycling etc.
  2. Prepare inventories of polluting sources; take mitigation measures if possible, and if not, forward it to enforcement agencies.
  3. Monitor the water quality of water bodies in and around the campus, including drinking water sources and ascertains its portability and suitability of use. The concerned district office of KSPCB will assist inwater quality testing etc.
  4. Curriculum related assignments on local environmental issues including pollution monitoring,biodiversity surveys, Waste management, documentation of indigenous traditional knowledge etc
  5. Prepare locally relevant resource materials.

  3. Survey on friendly and unfriendly pests and plants in the locality 
  4. Photo exhibition on friendly and unfriendly pests and plants of the locality
  5. “Elimination of unfriendly plants and materials from campus” A cleaning campaign inside the campus.
  6. Certificate distribution for students who have completed 40 hours in “Bhoomithrasena” working

Report 

The 3 day nature study camp was completed at Shola National Park range Vattavada Munnar total 45 BMSC members participated in it. The camp curriculum was so designed that students got familiarized with pest plants of that arnge and they have attended a one day program of elimination of pest plants at Sholai wildlife range. All the other programs are yet to be finished this year.
