FIRST DEGREE PROGRAMME (FDP) STRUCTURE

The First Degree Programmes include (1) Language Courses, (2)Foundation Courses, (3) Core Courses in the Major Subjects related to Degree Programmes, (4) Complementary Courses on allied subjects, (5) Open Course,(6) Elective Courses and (7) Project/Dissertation. In the case of Career Related First Degree programmes under CBCSS, there shall be a component of Vocational Course.

1.Semester
Semester means a term consisting of 90 working days distributed over a minimum period of 18 weeks.

2.Course
Course means a portion of a subject to be taught and evaluated in a semester. A Course of 4 credits will meet a minimum of 4 hours per week and treated as full Course. A Semi-course of one credit will meet at least one hour per week in a semester.

3.Language Course
Language Courses are courses in English and an Additional Language of student’S choice. Students who join for any B.A./B.Sc programme in this college have to study 6 courses in English and 4 courses in Additional Language. The Additional Languages offered are Malayalam, Hindi and Sanskrit. Those who join for B.Com programme have to study 4 courses in English and 2 courses in Additional Language.

4.Foundation Course
Students who join for B.A./B.Sc. programmes have to study one course under language and one course under Core.  B.Com programme students have  totakeupboththeFoundationCoursesundertheCoresubject.

5.Core Course
Core course means compulsory course in a main subject related to the  First Degree Programme (FDP) in a discipline. Students who join for B.A./B.Sc. programmes have to study compulsory 12-15 Core courses and submit one Dissertation/Project report. 

For B.Com Programme a student has to attempt 16 Core courses and submit one Dissertation/Project work.

6.Complementary Course
Complementary Course means a course in a subject other than the major subject and is complementary to the main subject. Students who join for B.A./B.Sc. programmes have to study 8 to 10 Complementary courses while for B.Com programme a student has to choose 4 Complementary courses.

7.Open/Elective Course
Students who join for B.A/B.Sc. programmes have to study two courses to a minimum of 4 credits and for B.Com Degree programme a student has to study 6 courses to a minimum of 20 credits. Open course means an optional course which the student is free to take at his/her will. Open Course shall be a course offered by the Departments other than the Parent Department. Elective course means a specialized course from the frontier area of core subject.

Examination for Open Courses must be scheduled by the University and are to be conducted by Colleges strictly adhering to the schedule. The Question Papers are to be prepared by the Colleges and after the conduct of the examination the  attendance statement along with 2 copies of Question Papers should be forwarded to the University. Evaluation is to be done by the respective Colleges. The students should write the examination in University answer book supplied by the University and the same will be distributed for evaluation among the teachers of respective Colleges. The valued answer scripts are to be kept in the respective Departments for 2 years. After valuation, the mark list must be send to the University within 20 days from the date of conduct of examination. Online submission must also be done at the appropriate time.
